The 67th Annual Meeting of the Piedmont Orthopedic Society at The Cloister, Sea Island, Georgia, May 8-11, 2019 was a great success by all standards. The attendees are thankful for the efforts and organization of all aspects of the meeting by our co-chairmen Bob and Peggy Peroutka and David and Claudia Attarian. The Cloister again provided a superb venue for the scientific program and a variety of social events.

The meeting was attended by 102 members along with spouses, guests, and 32 children with a grand total of 210 in attendance. This was the most attended meeting in the history of the Piedmont! Don Ferlic introduced his friend Mike as our guest of honor in an entertaining manner. Dr. O'Neil's' presentation entitled “The Greatest Generation: My Two Fathers” was informative, historical, emotional, and memorable and was truly the highlight of the meeting. Mike O'Neil was accompanied by his wife Kitty, children, Brigid (husband Steven Wilkening), Michael (wife Elizabeth) and Patrick (girlfriend Megan).

Eight residents (Beau Kildow, Rita Baumgartner, Danny Scott, Ben Wooster, Anthony Catanzano, Tyler Vovos, Brian Dial, Sean Ryan) and their guests were sponsored by the Piedmont Orthopedic Society to attend the meeting. All of the residents presented original scientific papers and enjoyed the many social activities.

Recipients of the scientific awards were: the coveted Chairperson's Award-John Lewis; the Honored Piedmont Pitcher Award-Julia Visgauss; and the “prestigious” Kelley Award-Jean Evans. Honorable mention for the Chairperson's Award was Steve Poletti for his “Rabid Coyote Video”.

The Co-Secretary/Treasurer, Robert Fitch, was voted in unanimously by the membership. The Members-at-Large voted in for a three year term were Alex Vap and Melissa Erickson. The Co-Chairmen for 2024 will be Jason Hurst and Jeff Hodrick.

The meeting provided education on current orthopaedic topics and great fun for everyone. The resort activities included golf, tennis, fishing, skeet shooting, bocce ball, Texas Hold'em poker night on Friday, and singing and dancing with the “Sweetwater Junction” band until 1:00 a.m. at the Saturday night formal. We were also entertained with the local talent of vocalist, Dave Landeo and The Sol Beats, on Thursday and Friday nights. As always, the Piedmont Orthopedic Society is not an Annual Meeting to miss.

Next year will be our travel abroad meeting. The dates have been changed to more accommodate our children to June 10-14, 2020 at the Four Seasons Resort, Nevis, West Indies. Our co-chairmen will be Dean Taylor and Mack Aldridge who are already busy making special arrangements for everyone to enjoy.

James R. Urbaniak, M.D.
